Location

The
city is located in the westernmost part of the state of Rajasthan, India.
The city is surrounded by Pakistan on west, Bikaner on south and Jodhpur on
its eastern part.
About
This Golden City was founded by Bhatti Rajput Rawal Jaisawal in 1156 A.D.
It used to be a major trade routes to the western countries. This desert
town invites its visitors to experience its rich history, culture. Standing
in the heart of desert and showcases you some of the architectural beauty
including forts and palaces that attract tourists from all over the world.
Climate
Jaisalmer has a typically desert type climate with high temperature
difference. The best time to visit the city is during winters, especially
during October to March.
Sightseeing
» Jaisalmer Fort - Situated at an height of 80m on
the Trikuta hill this magnificent fort was built in 1156 by Bhatti Rajput
ruler, Rao Jaisal. The fort can be approached through four gateways named
the Suraj Pol, the Ganesh Pol, the Hava Pol and the Bhoota Pol. The fort
complex houses several lovely palaces, Jain temples, courtyards inside its
complex.
» Jain Temples - Inside the fort there are seven
beautifully carved Jain temples built between 12th and 15th century. These
temples are dedicated to Jain tirthankar Rishabhdevji and Sambhavanath.
These are open daily from 7 am to noon with no entry fee.
» Havelis - There are several impressive painted
havelis built by wealthy merchants. The major ones are the
Patwon-ki-Haveli(entry fee Rs 2), SalimSingh-ki-Haveli(entry fee Rs15) and
the Nathmal-ki-Haveli.

Gadisagar Lake - This rain water lake is a famous place for outing with
beautiful surroundings. Today, it is an ideal picnic spot, popular for
boating and bird-watching.
» Camel Safari - This is the most interesting way to
explore the city and the desert. There are several safari organisers, who
provide safari facilities at a minimum cost of Rs 350 per person per day.
Different hotels also arrange camel safari facility.
Other Attractions
Other must visit spots in Jaisalmer comprises of the Sam Sand Dunes,
Lodhruva Temples, Culture Centre & Museum, Desert National Park, Bada
Bagh.
Fairs and Festivals
The most famous local festival is the Camel Festival held during the winter
season of the year. Camel dance, camel races, folk dance and music are some
of the major attractions of this festival. The city is also known for its
Desert Festival celebrated during the month of February.
Shopping
Jaisalmer is one of the exciting place for shopping in Rajasthan. The city
is famous for embroidery and mirror work, blankets, old stone work, antiques
and some other handicraft items. Various shops located around the fort, the
Bhatia Bazaar, Barmer Embroidery House and the government run Rajasthani
Emporium near Amar Sagar Gate are some of the major shopping places in the
city.
