Location

The
Gateway of India is a monument located in the business capital of India,
Mumbai.
Overview
This was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to
Bombay in December 1911. This was designed by architect George Wittet and
the foundation stone was laid by the Governor of Bombay on March 31, 1911.
The construction was completed in 1924 and it was opened to public on 4th of
December, 1924 by the then Viceroy. Historically this is also significant as
the last British troops left independent India by marching through its
portals.
Architecture
The Gateway is built from yellow kharodi basatl and concrete, which
represents Indo-Sarecenic architectural style. The architecture is also
influenced by Gujarati and Islamic style such as wooden carvings. The
central dome is 15 m in diameter and rises to an height of 26 meter. With
four turrets and intricate lattice work carved into the yellow stone, this
is one of the finest example of colonial architectural heritage in India.
Attraction around
The statue of Maratha leader Shivaji and Swami Vivekanda are recently added
to the charm of the monument. Both these statues are located in the middle
of the formal front lawn, which is a popular gathering place for the
tourists and public.
